And in the phrase “you know what they say,” wouldn’t “they” be a counterexceptionym?
After all, who are “they”? Unless I make it clear who “they” refers to, we only know that “they” isn’t “you” and isn’t “me,” which is a pretty small subgroup, unless there are a lot of you out there. There’s only one me–that I’m aware of. In fact, unless I know who “you” are, all I can mean by it is “not me.” So in such a case, isn’t “you” a counterexceptionym?
